Campfire Bread in a Can Recipe

The ability to make bread on your camping trip is an awesome super power that will provide fresh, warm, delicious bread no matter how long your trip is. You can bake this campfire bread in an empty can or use your camping pot. Baking bread is super easy and breaking bread with friends is the stuff warm and fuzzy memories are made of.

3 ½ cups bread flour
1 sachet instant yeast
1 tsp. salt
6 tsps. maple syrup (or sugar)
¼ cup (60 ml) cooking oil and 1 tbsp. for oiling the pot
1 – 2 cups of lukewarm water

Save a couple of teaspoons of flour for kneading. Mix the rest of the flour, yeast and salt. Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients and slowly add the syrup (or sugar) and oil, stirring as you go. Now add just enough water to make a dough that binds nicely, but isn’t sticky.
Knead the dough until it is elastic and smooth. Leave it to rise in a warm spot. When it has

doubled in volume (usually about 30 minutes), knead it again for ten minutes.
Place the dough in your well-oiled camping pot or can and leave it to rise again for 15-20 minutes until it has risen to about an inch from the top of your pot. Now place the pot on the coals and use your tongs to place a couple of coals on the top of the pot.
Bake until a knife stuck into the center comes out clean.

You can substitute 6 spoons of sugar for the maple syrup and place the dry ingredients in a Ziploc bag. Just add oil and water when you are ready for bread.
Place the pot on your grill to avoid burning the bottom of the bread.
