Proverbs 29:18 KJV

Clean your mirror
Vision helps you see God and start copying Him: His generous outbursts, His little kindnesses, His supernatural encounters with others. But you can’t get vision by squinting your eyes really hard. C. S. Lewis has this to say: ‘If God does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him. And, in fact, He shows much more of Himself to some people than others – not because He has favourites, but because it is impossible for Him to show Himself to a man whose whole mind and character are in the wrong condition. Just as sunlight, though it has no favourites, cannot be reflected in a dusty mirror as clearly as in a clean one.’ Have a look at 2 Kings 6:15-17 for an example. So the first step is asking God for vision. And then taking a look at yourself. Where’s the dust on the mirror? Is your mind sceptical to the point of dismissing anything that sounds like God? Are you inclined to be irritable and lazy? Where are the bits that reflect God, that look most like Jesus? As you press into those, reflecting Him more and more, you’ll find you can see God more and more clearly (Matthew 5:8). The good news is that as a believer, you naturally have the ability to see and hear God. We all do. You don’t have to worry about ‘getting’ vision. (Check John 14:26.) What God wants to see is you pressing into it, saying, ‘Yes, I am hungry for this. I am bothered about this.’
